“Cal Poly asserts that reading is a key institutional
value, a tool for community building, and an unending source of
mental pleasure.”
Preface marks the beginning of your collegiate experience at Cal Poly and provides you the rare opportunity to have something in common with your fellow students! What an easy way to make friends, break the ice, and start talking.
New students are expected to finish reading The Lovely Bones by the end of summer. When you arrive on campus for WOW (Week of Welcome), you will meet in small groups to discuss the book on Wednesday, September 20, 2006. Then, on October 12, 2006 as the highlight of Preface, you will have the opportunity to meet the author, have your book signed, and hear her speak.
The Lovely Bones, which reached the top of the New York Times bestseller list faster than any debut novel in recent times, is a tale of family, memory, love, and living. Told from Susie Salmon’s perspective in heaven, the story reveals the awful events of the 14-year-old’s violent death and shows that hope and joy are possible despite inexplicable loss. Out of unspeakable tragedy, Sebold crafts a beautifully written narrative, acclaimed as "full of suspense," and "painfully funny."
Reading the Preface book gives you a leg up on the academic expectations at Cal Poly and offers students a common intellectual experience. You may even find The Lovely Bones as required reading in some of your first year courses – and you’ll be ahead of the game.
