Book Selection Criteria

 Montana 1948 is the winner of The Milkweed National Fiction Prize, the Mountains & Plains Bookseller Association Regional Book Award and named one of the Best Books of 1993 by Library Journal and Booklist.
A big story captured in a beautifully written, morally complex, gripping little novel told from the view point of a 12 year old boy. David Hayden is looking back forty years at a series of events that formed his own moral center. The son of the local sheriff, he remembers a time of conflict and violence within his family and community and comes to understand how the most important decisions are sometimes made extremely difficult when the only choices are between competing goods.
Selected PREFACE books must satisfy a number of the PREFACE book selection criteria. They are selected by a campus-wide committee of faculty, staff, and students.
Four Main Criteria - the book should:
- Be engaging to students
- Generate issues of social relevance and intellectual depth
- Have a broad appeal across disciplines
- Generate issues of personal relevance
(Possible themes: students’ futures, transition, independence, exploration of values, cross-cultural awareness)

- Readable/Accessible
- Generally between 200-400 pages
- Living author
