Join PREFACE & SLO County Reads 2008
PREFACE: The Cal Poly Shared Reading Program has consistently proven an occasion for the campus community to join with SLO County residents in a memorable intellectual experience. Now in its 7th year, the program helps orient new students to the Cal Poly State University by designating a book to read over the summer and coordinating small-group discussions during WOW. The experience culminates with a free public presentation by the author in October. The book selection for 2008 is Montana 1948 by Larry Watson.
On campus discussions will be led by both campus and community volunteers. PREFACE will collaborate with SLO County Public Libraries in recruiting and training community volunteers to facilitate discussions with students as well as providing off-campus discussion sessions specifically for community members.

Khaled Hosseini speaks to volunteers at Volunteer Reception |
People like you, who enjoy reading and talking about books, are needed as book discussion facilitators to meet with Cal Poly students, Wednesday, September 17, 2008, from 8:30– 10:00 am. Volunteers enjoy an exclusive Volunteer Reception with author Larry Watson on September 24, 2008, and reserved seating at the public talk.
This year's book, Montana 1948, tells a big story, captured in a beautifully written, morally complex, gripping little novel told from the viewpoint of a 12 year old boy. He recalls a period of family and community conflict and comes to understand how the most important decisions are sometimes made extremely difficult when the only choices are between two competing goods.
Take part in an Information Session and receive a free copy of the book.
Complete the PREFACE online registration form to sign up or download a printable registration form and mail it in. Registration deadline is July 21. For more information: e-mail Preface or call Patricia Ponce at 756-1380.
Please join us in this unique, community-building project by volunteering to be a discussion facilitator!
